How do I see my computer webcam thats at home while I’m on another computer away from home?

Posted On April 13, 2010 In Home Desktop Computers

I’m going to install a webcam on my computer at home so I can see my dog while I’m away. Would any inexpensive webcam work that I buy?

Then how do I connect to my home computer from another computer while I’m away.

Also could you please tell me where I should go online to learn more about connecting to my home computer webcam while on another computer away from home. Thank you for your help.

I did the same thing when our dog had puppies. I called it The Puppy CAM! So my wife and Mother could log in at work to check on the puppies (and show their coworkers)

Any cheap webcam will do, and the software I used is called Yawcam. It’s free, and works great.

Here is a link to Yawcam
    http://www.yawcam.com/

Once your webcam is installed, and you have installed Yawcam. Open Yawcam, and go to Settings/Edit Settings.

On the left click on Stream.
You will see Port, Stream Type, Image Quality etc..

Really all you need to mess with is Page designer.
Click on it and you can now edit the text that will appear on the webpage when your cam is being viewed, like Title, Heading, and a message that you can add to be displayed below your cam.

once your editing is done, you can choose preview to see how it looks. When done, hit OK and you will be back to the YawCam Control panel. At the top click on Help/Whats my URL. It will direct you to a page showing the URL for your webcam. Copy the URL next to where is says Stream and email it to yourself.

Then when at work, as long as you have Yawcam running with Stream enabled, you should be able to click the URL for your webcam at home, and happily check on your dog as needed.

*note* If you are behind a Router, you may need to do Port forwarding to enable access to your webcam from work.
Call the manufacture of your router and they can give you step by step instructions on how to do port forwarding.
This also applies if you have a firewall installed on your computer. Either shut the firewall down, or in the firewall settings, forward the port for yawcam (default yawcam port is 8888)

Assuming you have a webcam/video cam, you can do it free.
(Have a look at this sites other applications and pick one that fits you needs and skill level if these don’t look good):

    HSSVSS
is a monition detection system that can be used for video surveillance of your home or office. It displays full-screen video from your web cam or other capture device and offers a customizable detection zone and sensitivity levels to fine-tune the motion detection. If the program senses a motion, it automatically captures an image, adds a time stamp and saves it to a local folder and/or remote FTP server. Unfortunately it does not offer any additional alert features or actions to be triggered by a detection so it is mostly useful for passive monitoring. Other features include a thumbnail mode, emailing of reports (manually) and support for up to 2 cameras.
(That’s for getting shots to the net)

This is for viewing the above:
    Camebert
is a web cam viewer that can be used to monitor any number of web cams around the globe. You can set the program to automatically update each cam on a pre-defined schedule. A really neat feature is the option to minimize the web cams to a tiny row of thumbnails (size can be customized) which allows you to keep an eye on the cam without wasting much desktop space. Additional features include support for proxy servers, import of web cam lists and more. (Requires free registration)
